Last time when that almost happened I was doing Dunes of Despair. At the gate, before lowering the bridge we killed the few enemies on the other side with ranged attacks. They dropped two of those monstrous claw thingys, one on either side of the bridge. After lowering the bridge those who got the drops assigned to them were smart enough to not go get them since we were fighting. You'll probably see where this is going now. After the drops became free prey, both our tank and monk decided to make a run for it and get those cheap items, which almost resulted in a wipe. If there are people willing to screw up a mission just because of a low-priced items like those, imagine what they'll do for golds or greens?
The drop system should be changed, maybe so that you could get someone else's drop only if the player to which the item was assigned to, leaves. In that case the item would be randomly assigned to another player to prevent 3 people sprinting to the item, getting the rest of the party killed.

Lol.....
You don't get out that much, do you.
We are talking about farming areas not mission or low lvl areas.
Farming areas requires certain builds for each class.
The Tombs which happens to be the area the OP got jacked at.
Is one of those farming areas. This is how it works. Someone
forms a group. Everyone that gets invited into that group. Knows
their builds. Or they will be given a certain build that the leader wants.
There is no way the whole party can be killed if a person or two grabs
their drops. It only takes a second maybe two. But why are we even
disscussing this?
Now back on topic.
Shit happens bro. That's life for you.
Always pick up your drops. If you don't. Someone might think you
don't want it. That's how it is with any Farming groups. But don't get me
wrong I feel your pain and anger. If that was me who got jacked. I
would track that person. And try to scare him or her. So I can get
what belongs to me back.

Excuse me? If you would have taken the time to read my post, you might have noticed that I stated two problems:
-Not getting drops that have been assigned to you
-Getting wiped at places where you have to return to outpost and start over
Whether it be UW, FOW, SF, Tombs or missions, those apply. Why you dragged farming into this, I'll never know. The same problems arise just as well when a group of people try to play casually and there's one idiot in the group. Does it really matter if your 15^50 fellblade gets jacked during a 5-man Oro run or while completing Thunderhead Keep?
I also tried to offer a possible solution for the problem, but hey, if discussing things makes you bored, I guess throwing shit around randomly works too

Lol he even took the ogre-slaying knife?
You'd think ANet would have safeguards in place for something like this, since it's pretty well understood that people wouldn't not want their green or gold drops. Item assignements expiring has its problems for whites and blues too. I'm sure everyone's had an experience with someone who'll turn around and abandon you mid-fight to pick up what... 500g worth of white drops 5 minutes behind you.
I guess you could have taken precautions yourself by killing the darknesses last, or as close to last as possible ;p

You can't report him if drop assignments dropping out are a feature of the game...

Unfortunate, but true. You can file a complaint and if Anet gets enough because of a problem like this, they may address it by extending the expiration time or something along those lines. But as far as banning or even suspending the person, I wouldnt count on it. It's cheesy and low, but I don't think Anet takes action against people for stuff like this, unless it's an obvious scam.

Once in FoW, someone died who had a shard drop for them, everyone, being mature players, kept their distance from it as we cleared the few enemies and rezzed him....all but the ranger, whose standing on top of it, obviously spam clicking the shard and not fighting. He never got it, but i was still really pissed off at them...what a total noob.

That is the lowest of the low for farming. Even worse than going afk the whole trip and appearing at the end to get drops (which happened to be the Bulwark).
Although to be honest, if the greens have dropped why the hell didn't you pick em up there and then? Sod the other groups, i couldn't give a damn if they kill everyone unless they haven't got there green first. At which point i will res them asap.
As for scrounging, i normally wait until AFTER the FoW group has fallen apart before i go round and pick up about 4k worth of whites. Although when i play Order necro in tombs i will wander off and pick up items, purely becuase orders have such a long range though.

i feel bad for those people who got ripped (darkness just dropped me an experience boosting scroll). imagine the time spent getting there.
i think item assignments should be fixed, say remove drop assignments from someone if that person logged/err7ed/quit or never remove drop assignments at all..

Maybe a solution could be if you clicked on an item dropped for you, it appears in your inventory without your having to run up to grap it...dead or not.

Been happening all the time, ESPECIALLY w/ 55 HP monks aggroing and getting the SS killed so he/she can take the globs of ecto. They usually turn off their chat and set offline and just wait for a few mins. Then, they grab ecto and run, lol. Dude, that REALLY sucks, hope you weren't the one w/ the Bulwark . Noobs plague the new UW though. Like going w/ "experienced" groups, and then like half the group says "Wow, never been here before!" when they see the darknesses. It was probably a Wammo or something like that, lol.

well perhaps they should fix it by making all drops *stay* assigned....if you dont want it, just click it, pick up then drop it.....
although, it might be best to limit that to areas that are desert and past, if you know what i mean...
i dont think most players are going to fight over low level whites and so on unless they are penniless at the time.
same goes for purples and golds...they seem to be lowr and lowr, i dont find that many usefull ones..they tend ot be opposite what i actually want/need lol....
so to sumarise...once your character gets to the desert or beyond *and any area that drops *good MAX and green drops* your items that are not whites or crafting mats STAY ASSIGNED...however when you pop back to befor the desert, anything will time out still.....

Yeah, I think items should only be unassigned if you are no longer part of the game as that just opens the door for all kinds of drop stealing. Someone should make a thread on that in Sardelac, huh...

If a Bulwark drops for you, unless you're already dead at the time of the drop, it's time to look out for #1. If I had to charge past 10 Glints to get it, killing myself in the process, I would, ESPECIALLY if it was in danger of going public.
I've had people do this in groups I've been in. Believe me, I understood.
Hey, how angry could I be? The drop assignment system exists such that people *can* do dishonourable BS and steal valuble drops. I wouldn't chance it myself.
